Actually, the next "jump" was from 8 to 10, then 12-bit ADCs in cameras. I do think we'd all agree that 12 bits/channel is better than 8. The remaining bits in the 12-bit word are simple not used. I'm personally dubious of anything over 14 bits - meaningful data, or not?

Back when he was still CEO of Leaf, Bob Caspe claimed that the last two bits on the Leafscan were 'noise, but weighted noise...'

At MacUser Labs, we actually tried to see how many discrete levels the scanner could capture between film base+fog and the noise floor, but we couldn't find any reliable targets with a density >3.2, and while we tried stacking film chips, we were pretty sure that the interlayer effects wound up making the whole exercise more than a little dubious, so we never published the results. I'm pretty sure that we found that the first 14 bits were probably honest, though.

I doubt Adobe is looking to change things - 15 vs. 16 bits is definitely not a "real world" problem. Sorry if it seemed I was serious.

For anyone who does find it a real-world problem, CS2 is introducing support for HDR (High Dynamic Range)-32-bit floating-point per channel per pixel. That should hold them for a while...
