You've just reminded me about an article in the UK MacUser that arrived
today that showed the cover of the magazine from 15 March 1996:
"Genesis Exclusive: In the time that it takes you to read this, Daystar's
clone will have blasted through a 35Mb Photoshop image"
That was a big deal back then!
Sure, technology has moved on - but has Photoshop's architecture?
Even if we forget the need to support old computers, processing big images
means that you get bottlenecks. Using 32769 levels is very practical when
you need to move gigs of data through the system.
In 15 day's time we'll all get to play with Core Image & Core Video and see
how the filters (100+ was the promis) compare with Photoshop.
Why wait for all that data to go through the CPU when the GPU can do the job
faster?
Why wait for Photoshop to render a twirl - only to realize that you've got
it in the wrong position - when you can move the effect in real-time in
Tiger?
It will be interesting to see how Adobe respond. At the moment they appear
to be doing little more than criticising Tiger for being a 32-bit OS
masquerading as a 64-bit OS.
Should be interesting.
