When the Spirit and Opportunity rovers started sending back color pictures
from the surface of Mars, there was an interesting thread in this
ColorSync list about how the photographic information was developed into
color images (as I recall, the a small color wheel and sundial were
attached to the rover's body for reference). But how would color
information be interpreted when pictures are taken, say, from a satellite
that doesn't have the benefit of a reference color source?
I was wondering about that this morning as I read that NASA will be
sending an uber high-resolution 14 CCD camera on the Mars Reconnaissance
Orbiter Wednesday morning. The article is available at
