Hello everyone,
I am puzzling over the way photoshop displays all three channels vs.
individual channels in a completely neutral RGB image.
I open an RGB image, which is nearly neutral to begin with, and desaturate
it. All RGB values are now equivalent. The histogram of each channel looks
the same as the histogram of the RGB image. The channels themselves each
display the same grayscale image, but the individual channel grayscale
images are significantly lighter than the RGB composite even though the
individual channel histograms are equivalent to the the composite.
If I select one of these channels and convert the mode to grayscale, I seem
to have an image that has the same histogram as the erstwhile RGB composite,
but visually it does not look like the same image.
Now backtrack to the RGB composite, and convert it, with all 3 channels this
time, to grayscale. The appearance of the new grayscale image is identical
to the original desaturated RGB image, but wait, the histogram of the new
grayscale image is very different from the histograms of the RGB and its
channels. (and before you ask, yes, in each case I did refresh the
histograms)
Before you puzzle over why in the world this would matter to me, which would
be a good question, trust me, you have better things to do than hear my long
story. So please just humor me and see if you can come up with an answer to
the riddle (assuming you have nothing better to do ;-).
Will
