I'm not opposed to dot proofs either. One problem with most digital workflow
today is that film is forever gone. So, all the "dots" that are shown to us,
AFAIK, don't bear a true 1:1 relationship to the dot that will actually hit
the press. At least, that's the impression I got from my experience. That's
why I believe that insisting on producing dots for the sake of producing
dots is moot. Predicting moire patterns and other optical artifacts is fine
but I submit that, basically, Approval proofs or Creo proofs or PolaProofs
and FinalProofs and all inkjet proofs are meant to show expected press
color.
