I actually think that there is at least one application, ImagePrint, that

Greyscales made with color inks are not counted in this test I
presume :-)
Epsons do not accept 16 bits on a single channel so ImagePrint
may have more16 bit processing stages if that isn't brought to
more channels (several quad sets, Epson K3 printers) I doubt
there will be much improvement in monochrome printing with
black only. Even with quad sets and the QTR B&W RIP (8 bits
though) it is difficult to get the 255 grey values perfectly
separated on the paper, but they deliver the smoothest
greyscales in printing. The QTR profile creation also adds the
ICC perceptual curves for the different papers + Dmax
possible on those papers. With B&W ink sets now used on 3 up
to 7 channels the actual output (when the drops leave the
nozzle) should be way above 16 bit. Whether one can measure
the 16 bits on the paper is another matter.
Ergosoft's Studioprint, QTR, ImagePrint and a few other RIPs
can all drive the quad ink sets.
As I understand it Gutenberg (used to be Gimp-print) is now 16
bit all the way. QTR is based on Gimp-print there's a chance
that this could be the next step for QTR too.
