Onyx Rip's accept 16 bits and print 16 bits to a very large list of printers.

This is not a new thing. The RIP I used to be responsible for had 12 bits of precision at the output. Given the dynamic range of inkjet output, plus the visual masking effect of the screening, and taking into account the limits of practical color profiles, this seemed more than adequate. 16 bits is almost certainly overkill (but convenient from a programming perspective).
