Marco,
I just completed the first round of a CMYK custom profile built with
ProfileMakerPro v5.04 last week end. Weaving a Device to PCS table around
this particular set of characterization data was no small feat, many
non-linearities and horrible non-monotonic behavior, to say the least.
Tonight, with the help of 5.05, I created a second profile based on the same
horrible data set. The results? Well, I opened up the custom CMYK chart in
Photoshop, the one I used to create the characterization on press in the
first place, proceeded to assign the 5.04 profile, looked at the colors,
their apparent smoothness, then assigned the 5.05 profile: the 5.05 profile
was noticeably smoother, in tint ladders and gradations. No question. So, in
my opinion, this is wunderbar. Oh! Building the profile was faster.
Now, 5.05 brings a number of other new options to the table that, in all
fairness, I have not had time to review personally. But it is nevertheless
noteworthy that this new smoothing capability (better interpolation
algorithm), is absolutely critical in some subject matters such as portrait
work and natural scenery (skies and landscape), could readily be found in
PrintOpen v5 a year ago. There, the degree of smoothing is user-controllable
on a scale from 0 to 10.
I like both packages. And some others. But that's my mileage. I respect
everyone's opinions on this list ;-)
