Would you mind briefly outlining your channel mixer technique?
It's image specific, so no automation. I start by reviewing the
individual channels of the image in question to see which channels
contain the detail. Typically I find myself combining data from two
channels primarily. Set the Channel Mixer to Monochrome and fiddle.
With the info pallet open I make sure I get no absolute whites
(zeroes in CMYK, 255's in RGB). You can also soft-proof through a
Grayscale profile to see how much gradation you're retaining/losing.
After you've done that convert to grayscale. Many times after the
conversion, I'll set the black point with curves or levels.
Yes, it is very manual, and it requires the operator to make
editorial decisions. I just haven't found a way that works better for
me. Using a conversion to a grayscale profile leaves the images a bit
flat by comparison.
