I believe the point is that you mix to the channel you will use and then
split the channels...with no further conversion. Then print with the devices
gain in mind using an appropriate ICC profile or a simple gradation curve
(it is one color offset after all).
I would add that just like the old days, it is good to keep dot at _both_
ends of the scale...this keeps the ability to change values. If you think
about it, color correction (not translation) is simply digital dot etching.
So you can shrink or swell a dot that is there but if you ever go to 0 or
100 (255/0) you have a blob of white or black and moving the surrounding
dots smoothly will show a harsh break.
