Fairfax,
Many thanks for your feedback and the excellent pdf!
I have to agree on your experience with the early spyder, I had one too.
I personally use the Spectrocam and BaciCColor Display now on 22" Cinema
and it is way better, but was not cheap.
The Eye One seems to be the best option in the price range, but the requisites
being not too high, maybe the ColorVision PrintFix suite could be plenty
at half cost. Still E1D has dual monitor support.
Best regards from Switzerland

I just got a Gretag MacBeth Eye One Display 2 monitor
profiler for Apple 23" LCD Cinema Display and very happy with it. Much better
than our old Spyder 1 with Optical. I just got a great Epson photo print
that closely matched my digital photo although I don’t have any printer profiling
capabilities.
See the attached review PDF or go to this url for a comparison:

Looks like Gretag MacBeth Eye One Display 2 is particularly good for
LCDs. From the review it looks as if the the i1 Display 2's handles the
light tones better than the Spyder 2 but Spyder 2 handles the darks better.
GMB can handle dual dipslays. See their FAQ’s on how to do it.
You might look seriously at Monaco’s Optix.
