I would suggest that you try using the utility called Cocktail (available
for download at <http://www.macosxcocktail.com/download.html>).
I own a copy myself, and use it regularly. It runs many powerful maintenance
routines, and I find it very useful in keeping things in good shape in my
hard drive. What Cocktail implements quite well is a whole slew of UNIX
routines, but with an interface that is very friendly and self-explanatory,
requiring none of the very tricky line commands that UNIX is so infamous for
(or famous, depending on one's point of view...).
Running Cocktail's routines on your Mac might turn out to be all you need to
do.
