If you are trying to create an artful black and white print, experience
indicates that the black and white reproduction will be in the eye of the
beholder.
So, as for trying to figure out how to match something like a hard copy
black and white positive or negative or an original scene that started in
color that you want to reproduce as a black and white print based on a
certain camera and lens combination, seems like an unrealistic exercise.
You can try, and you might even start to succeed, that is..... until you ask
for an opinion.
My experience is that if you ask 20 people how to convert from color to
grayscale you will probably get at least 10 very good techniques.
The one of many tips I like for converting color to grayscale is by Russell
Brown.
