Color shift in PhotoShop 8

I have a question regarding PhotoShop 8 (CS1) and converting to a color
space.
My workflow is like this: any PhotoShop file that comes in gets opened and
if it is RGB it gets converted to my press profile. If it is already cmyk I
convert to the embedded profile, save the file and toss the profile
(otherwise, my RIP will toss the profile anyway but if the photo is not
converted to the color space I have no assurances that the correct color is
coming through). This has been working very well since PhotoShop 5.5 or so.
I have a job in house that came with the following embedded profile:
U.S. Web Coated (SWOP) v2. Pretty standard, have used it many times.
This particular job I did this to. Everything looked fine. But the proof
came out very yellow. When I open the PS file it is also yellow. I figured I
made a mistake and converted using the wrong profile. Went back to the
original and did the same thing. Turns out, when I convert everything looks
fine at that point but when I save the file and reopen it, using no tag, it
also is now very yellow. After some tests it seems that this is the only
version of PS that does this. I tried 6 and 9 and both of those look fine.
Anything going on with 8 that anyone is aware of?
Thanks in advance.
