Interesting & useful discussion on LCD displays & profiling. Thanks to all,
especially C.D.T., for helpful input.
Doug, I know this isn't exactly what you're looking for, but just to add an
observation:
I recently bought the Dell 2005FPW (reportedly the same screen as Apple 20",
different backlight). So far, am quite pleased. I am even more pleased with
the calibration/profile generated by BasICColor Display (driving an EyeOne).
I don't know whether this software supports your Spyder (and I have fond
memories of ColorVision products on my CRTs), but if it does, download the
14-day trial & check it out. My setup is similar to yours - the Dell is my
capture station monitor, driven by the PowerBook.
BasICColor uses DDC, so no need to mess with setting controls manually - I
just tell it I want 140cm2 (I don't miss those old days in a dark cave with
CRTs ;-), pick a gamma or use L*, have it measure & use native color temp
(reported as 6501K), and I'm done.
Monitor has a nice gray balance, profile similar to, a bit larger than my
20" Cinema Display. I did compare profiling with iOne Match 3.2 - results
weren't bad, but the GM software could not use DDC, which was a
"deal-breaker". Plus, the software license (for one cpu) was $50 - can't
beat that.
I still use iOne Match for the Apple monitors on the desktop machines (no
DDC), but the Dell is quite good with this software.
Regards,
John
