Hi Steve,
Basically you cannot print black-only with any of the Epson Ultrachrome
printers. The black is very warm/yellow. The best option for getting as
much black as possible but keeping it neutral is to use maximum GCR
when building a profile. Obviously, this is not directly applicable to
GMG if you stick with their MX4 profiles but I know they tried to
increase the K amount in the 4.0.38 release. If you want the
particulars of using ICC profiles with GMG, let me know and I'll give
you the run-down. It's a bit tricky but you might get better neutrals
with less metamerism if you use ICC profiles within GMG.
Try this:
* Print a 21 step stepwedge of each ink using only an MX3 profile, no
MX4.
* Using your Eye-One and Measure Tool, take spot measurements of the
black ink using Lch. Any c/chroma value above about 1-2 is indicating
it's casted. The h/hue angle will tell you what color cast it has. Hue
angles around 90 degrees +/-10 degrees indicate yellow.
I'm not sure who told your owner that you could print un-color managed
black but it's simply not the case. The 9600 uses the SAME black ink as
the 10600 but simply adds a light black for smoother blacks from
highlight to midtone. But even the light black is casted.
I don't know if the newer x800 (4800, 7800, 9800) using the new
Ultrachrome inks use a better black (more neutral with a higher density
would be an improvement over the current ink) but it might be worth
checking into.

Running black only out of 9600. We are trying to get
more of a neutral black out of our 9600 for halftone
work flow. I know this can be done through edits to
black through GMG.Our owner, posed the statement that
the reason we bought the 9600 is because we could have
it print blacks as black without other colors
involved. When I tried to get a black only out of the
9600 the black looked on the warm side, almost with a
yellowish cast to it. I tried a screen test of screens
of 5% to 100%. I put a glass on the proof and did not
see evidence of any other colors being applied to it.
It just looked like black, but was as I say warm. Is
this the nature then of the black Ultra chrome. We are
using the Photo Black.I was curious if the Matte Black
was different. Also just to verify then, in order to
get the black we need to acheive, we do need to color
manage it?
