There is a very dramatic difference in both noise, and sharpness
between the Imacon and the Nikon. They are really not in the ballpark,
either sharpness or noise, which given that one is a $2000.00 scanner,
and the other is $15-$20k is only right. The Nikon is a good scanner
for the money, but not a Imacon. The other issue with the Nikon is
speed, the 9000 appears to be slightly slower than the previous model
the 8000. A multipass scan with the Nikon can take as long as 60 min
or more if you turn on things like ICE.
I have had several people trade Precision 2’s up to 848s. In all cases
they reported a decrease in the noise in the shadow area. Imacon has
gone to a lot of trouble to clean up the noise, the sensor is actively
cooled on the 848 and 949. The other improvement is mainly speed, they
are 2-3 faster than a Preciaion.
Wet mounting on a Nikon 8000-9000 with a converted MF carrier makes a
lot of difference. Sharpness is then at least at the Imacon level.
Multipass of more than 2x isn't delivering much more in noise reduction
but 2x is usually sufficient. Longer Exposure with Vuescan software
merges a normal scan with a scan for the highest densities. This works
well. ICE isn't really needed for wet mounted films and careful
anti-static dust removal but still possible (not with B&W silver film
though). The Imacon doesn't have ICE. The Nikon 9000 isn't a PMT drum
scanner but it gets much closer to an Imacon than an Imacon is to a drum
scanner.
Noise reduction comes in many disguises.
In short, I think the Imacon's price isn't justified if compared to
refurbished PMT drumscanners like the Howtek's and if compared to the
Nikon 8000-9000 with wet mount carriers.
