You may already be aware of this, but a friend of mine discovered
recently that, in Acrobat 6, if your "Color Settings File" is set to
"None" and your "Color Management Policies" are set to "Leave Color
Unchanged", greyscale files will be converted to 4-color (I think using
whatever working space is designated). However, if your settings file is
"Color Management Off", the greyscales will remain greyscale. This may
not help out with the Bauman Printing problem, but it's something else
to watch out for.

If you are using a CMYK workflow, you can convert your image to a cmyk
tiff with nothing in the CMY channels and your greyscale image in the
black channel. If you are using an RGB workflow, then someone else
might have to suggest something.
