Hi Gary,
The white tray certainly helps speed up the measuring process because it holds
the target, keeping it from moving about while you line up the row of patches
but it is not absolutely necessary. The white tray also acts as a black tray allowing
optional white or black backing for measuring targets.
All in all, I think that the accessory kit is a must inclusion because of the other
useful features it contains. I'm thinking specifically of ColorShop X and the plug
in charger for the Pulse.

It has been a few months since I have done this (spoiled by the DTP70) but from
memory, after lining up a row of patches to be measured you place the Pulse
outside the first patch press and hold the read button and glide the Pulse
smoothly across across the row of patches where you release the button after
reaching the other side. It is very easy and I think you get some feedback if
there is an error made in reading (usually to do with either too fast or too slow)
