IMHO...these numbers are absolutely meaningless...
A digital camera does not output color. Color is a sensation in the
human brain.
Digital cameras output files containing numbers. The CCD or CMOS chip
system outputs a linear representation of the amount of light that fell
on a pixel that was behind a filter that was red, green, or blue. To be
exact we would need to talk about the spectral response of both the chip
and the three filters. If the file is RAW, this data is further
processed for white point and other factors and converted into a
standard color workspace (sRGB, Adobe RGB 98, etc.). If the output is
TIFF or JPEG, then this further processing is done in the camera.
To produce "COLOR" it requires that you output through additional
processing to a device like an LCD, CRT, or reflective printing device.
This additional processing effects the color that is sent to the eye.
These systems have there own accuracy problems seperate from the camera.
Your next question is...Is this color "accurate". Most people do not
want "accurate" color reproduction. No film on earth produces
"accurate" color reproduction. Most film gives "pleasing" color
reproduction. This is especially true of skin tones.
You may be able to rate the "accuracy" of an end to end system, but you
cannot speak about the accuracy of a camera separate from a complete
reproduction system.
Thanks for your attention,

Hello folks,
I was reading the latest popular photography magazine last night and
all digital camera reviews reveals a delta-e and rate color camera
performance as good or bad as the delta goes down. Example was the
Nikon D70 review had delat-e 8.45 saying that was a good color
performer and the Canon 20d was 7.83 as an excellent color performer.
Is this something serious like the scanner D-max or just Pop Photo's
unique way of evaluating cameras.
Before I send an email asking how they did the test, have someone else
asked them? Scanner manufactures never did mention delta-e, right?
Other magazine and sites like dpreview.com never did either mention
delta-e numbers.
Atenciosamente,
Alex Hermann
