To me, the reason they are doing it from 50cm distance is to accommodate the
type on non-contact instruments they use to calibrate the LCDs. Take Eizo,
for example, you can tell from their litterature that they use Minolta
CL-210 non-contact colorimeter. Very nice by the way.
But, as you know, the majority of display calibration instruments we,
mortals, can afford are 'contact' instruments. The size of their opening is
rather large. But I don't see it as a limitation.
