John, you may be correct about this. On the other hand, this may simply
indicate that Michael's problem is SHARED by other computers. It does not
follow, though, that the reason for its occurrence could not be something
OTHER than hard disk failure, even at its incipient stages.
Also, it's true that Mac OS X DOES need maintenance on a regular basis,
contrary to the popular belief (a fallacy, I think) that it does not. I see
proof of that on several of the Macintosh computers I work with in my
activities as a freelancer: some of them act strangely until I do a
maintenance routine, and often work fine after it.
So, yes, it could be the hard disk, or it could also be the OS. There is
more than one possibility here: one does not exclude the other.
That having been said, running the Disk Utility application in the manner
you indicate to diagnose, and, if needed, repair the hard drive is indeed an
excellent suggestion, one that I second.
