Sounds about right. Without looking into the details, I would guess
that Don was essentially blocking part of the light with the black
material mentioned, which could decrease intensity without changing
the spectrum. Most transparent glass (and likely plastic imitations
too) used for windows, picture frames, etc. should have fairly flat
spectral transmission in the visible, but could tail off in the blue
end a bit too soon. However, each sheet would only reduce the
intensity by about 8%, so you'd need to stack a bunch of these to
reduce the intensity considerably. Note that any deviation from
spectral "flatness" will get significantly worse the more sheets you
stack. I am not patenting this idea :-) (Actually, there are
commercial devices based on this idea, believe it or not, for
attenuating laser beams.) Using Al foil to block part of the light
might also work and would be reasonably fire-safe if the bulb you're
using gets hot (but don't block the vents). You could also try a
piece of perforated sheet metal or similar object, possibly available
at your favorite hardware store -- just place it as close to the bulb
as practical to minimize shadows and uneven lighting from the hole
pattern. If you get 2 sheets and position them on top of each other,
you can control how much light gets through by moving one slightly
relative to the other. (Now this one does sound like a patent...
oops, too late, it's public domain...) Or if you've got time to spare
and very little money, take a large piece of Al foil and start poking
holes in it -- if nothing else, it will make you feel better by the
time you're finished...
