Title: RE: iMac G5 compared to 20" cinema display
Hi,
I'm late to this thread but have some experience I thought I'd share. I have both plastic bezel and aluminum bezel ACDs in my studio plus we just bought a handful of IMac G5s to deploy on magazine Photo Editors desks for the purpose of viewing and softproofing digital images. I have found that the iMac G5 20" is both clear, sharp and stable; we calibrate them with iOne Display colorimeters and PM5 once every 7-10 days and have seen no appreciable drift. The wide white bezel of the iMac G5 feels different to the eyes in use then does the ACDs thinner clear or aluminum bezels. I suspect that in low ambient light the point would be moot. I found the iMac G5 20" display luminence to be very bright, I only wish that the lowest brightness setting brought the CdM2 down below 130, out of the box the minimum brightness was about 150 CdM2.
I found that my photo editors enjoy using this machine very much. We even had some success putting a hood on the iMac G5, which ironically necessitated my cutting a slot in the side panel of the hood to enable access to the side loading CD/DVD slot. The hood helped to lessen the impact of the white bezel. If I had a choice, clearly, I'd choose an ACD or an Eizo or Quato but don't be afraid of the iMac G5; I think it serves quite well as a color-managed softproofing station.

Yes, I would love to hear if anyone has information on this -- we need to
upgrade one of our systems here, and I have been wondering the quality of
the iMac G5's display myself!
