Thank's Ray,
I suspected I was maybe complaining for nothing after I wrote my post
yesterday, that the max deviation I was getting, after all, was plenty
acceptable. But since I had no point of comparison, like manufacturer's
specs, I could not really tell.
At your suggestion, I'll try re-reading the charts a few times today to
characterize the deviation introduced by my instrument. Maybe that will shed
some light on what's going on inside the variability I observe. But I doubt
it.
Which makes me wonder how chemical proofs, like Matchprints and ColorArts,
compare to the best inkjets printers, in terms of average and max dE? From
what I can see, everyone is getting averages dE < 1 but that does not tell
the whole story. I am especially worried about what happens where the
largest dE are observed, 2.6 in my case and 4.66 in the case of Abhay Sharma
latest WMU). I hypothesized first, looking at the numbers, that the largest
deviation was lying in the shadows (lower L* values). I thought to myself,
then, that this sort of deviations in that area of an image, were not that
important or questionnable. But when I analyzed the data further I found
deviations in midtones and three quarter tones as well! So I had to reject
my hypothesis and conclude that there is nothing I could do about this
inconsistent behavior of this printing system. Still, it bugs me. Is
everyone in prepress aware of the variabilty of these devices?
What bugs me is I could swear the printer's repeatability was tighter when I
first received it. But maybe that was just an impression.
