Graham, I don't know how much the Creo Spire for the DocuColor 3535 costs,
but I bet it's expensive. Isn't that a bit of overkill for a beginner? I say
that because Elena just mentioned that "[her employers] don't want to spend
a lot of $."
In my own humble opinion, derived from my own experience, a cheaper workable
alternative would be to profile the device, then activate the profile within
the color management options in the printer's driver using either
Illustrator or Photoshop, making sure to select "No Color Management." True,
that requires that ALL users be trained to do it right, but I have tried it
with a local firm here in Marin County, and they are happy with the results
(although not so happy at having an additional level of complications to
deal with...). As long as they follow my instructions, and as long as the
profiles are updated and the device linearized on a regular basis, things
work, meaning that what they see on their profiled monitors is very close to
what they are able to print. It's NOT a proofing setup, mind you, just a way
closely to approximate a "what-you-see-is-what-you-get" situation.
Of course, designers would like it far better if they didn't have to deal
with ANY of the details of color management, but, as long as there is no
budget for a RIP, I think this is a workable solution for a small work
environment (say, 5 to 10 people). Elena's place has 30 people; at that
size, one starts having trouble keeping things under control. That, coupled
with lack of a budget, creates a bit of a problem when one tries to adopt my
scenario. But what else can Elena do on a shoestring, which seems to be her
predicament?
