Hi Neil,

you are right, missing light energy in some part
of the spectrum cannot generally be replaced by
more energy somewhere else. And a smooth
distribution is very likely to be better than a
jagged one. I didn't mean to imply the contrary,
but it surely sounds misleading. What I really
wanted to say is probably better expressed as:

With the Just-GTI issue in mind, you have two
spectra of fluorescent tubes, both with undulating
and spikey parts. My - unproven - gut feeling is that
if one has a more pronounced spike than the other,
it still depends on where that spike hits the reflectance
spectrum - you can't generally say it's not good just
by looking at that needle standing out.

I don't quite get your last question. Do you mean
that - according to my wording - seeing spikes in
the i1 spectrum would imply better reflection
spectra (and a match close to D50) when viewing?
To which the answer would be "no (see above)"...

Best regards,

Hanno

As a side note, jagged spectra do not
come with a lower quality by default - I'd say it very much depends on
where the spikes are...

IF the fallouts are within the expected range of reflectance normally seen
then how would one expect to view a true representation of colors in the
print reflected back that are missing from the spectra in the first place? I
don't think that metamerism can completely cover these missing wavelengths.
Jaggies of course are not the same as fallouts yet I see the spectra
measured with the i1 on the Just with quite sharp peaks or declines. Would
this not suggest a better reflection spectra in the viewing of the print?
