Contrast ratios are "marketing spiele" to me. It's impressive that a display
can spit out so much radiant power but, in typical usage, people don't drive
them at their full rated power. At least the ones I know including yours
truly. Take the latest iMatch softtware versions. They recommend 140 cd/m2.
Of course these displays can be brought down to those luminance values. But
the real issue, the way I understand the comments from those on the list who
have the chance to compare CG21s and Artisans, and who only swear by the
Artisans, other than the gray balance aspect, is the 'depthness' of black:
how black can these LCDs be compared to CRTs. And I suspect that this is
where contrast ratios can really gain from.
My two cents. Sorry, I am learning about flat panel displays as I go. I find
educating oneself about LCDs and FPD in general to be more difficult than
educating oneself about CRTs, where information is more readily available.
