Although I've not worked with third-party inksets, I do recall mention on
this list of companies (Lyson being one, I think) that made quadtone inks
for the Epson specifically for high-end B&W printing. Can any of the beta
testers weigh in on how the new Epsons' B&W printing stack up against
third-party solutions? Inferior, about the same, superior?
Beta testers are in an awkward position about criticizing products they test; I'd expect it to be a few months after actual release of the printers before we have a real sense of whether they suit the fine art printers or not. Certainly those who prefer a platinum/paladium split-tone effect will not find the new printers to offer what they need, and those who wish to devote an older generation printer to B&W will still need other solutions, as will those wishing to use unusual media, or third party inks, among other special situations. So the already fragmented B&W market will be further fragmented by this, but we really won't know just how much until we see which users are satisfied with the results and which ones aren't.
