Thanks, Chris. Then what real-world upsides and downsides might be
experienced by enabling that setting as opposed to the Color Controls

1) As a setting for profile creation and subsequent utilization
This would not be a good choice. A conversion will almost always occur.
For building a custom profile, you need to use an option other than
ColorSync in the printer driver.
2) Where no custom profile has been created, and you are enabling
Printer Color Management
Sometimes the correct profile is used and sometimes it's not, it
depends on the driver version, and apparently the phase of the moon. I
consider the ColorSync option in the print driver as unreliable at this
point. Supposedly new drivers for Tiger will do a better job, but
consider this problem affects some of every manufacturers' print
drivers, I remain skeptical.
The major missing component of this workflow is Black Point
Compensation. The documentation for it is now posted on the ICC web
site, so I think Apple needs to provide an API for its use, and see
that all printer drivers have the option for using it within every
print driver. And that goes for rendering intents as well. The major
graphics applications will send rendering intent settings along with
the job, which I'm pretty sure are honored by the OS, but this is
something that all applications need if Apple is interested in
providing the best chance for image reproduction to all applications.
Case in point, I can't control rendering intent or get black point
compensation from iPhoto 5 - Apple's latest and greatest.
