Greetings,
I have been a lurker on this digest and now that I have been working
for a while with an Epson 4000, run by a BestColor Rip (v5.02) using
Epson Proofing Paper Semimatte I would like to put what I have learned
to practice.
I had very good help setting up this proofer but still feel that the
proofs could match the press better, especially in the quarter and mid
tones of the red / yellow combination colors.
My question is about TIL and its relationship to profile gamut. Since
TIL is set via the Lin tool in Best I thought I would add my 2 cents to
this thread.
I have tried entering different papers in the Lin tool while actually
keeping the same paper in the Epson and I get different TIL numbers.
Examples below are paper type selected and TIL reported by Lin tool:
Best Proof Paper 9150 Semimatte, TIL 269
No paper selected, entered test, TIL 207
Best Proof Paper 5150 Glossy, TIL 248
Best Proof Paper 9380 Packaging, TIL 207
This leads me to believe that the paper selected somehow effects the
TIL that the Lin tool determines. For some reason this does not feel
right.
I also sent a "ramp" file to the Best supplied non color management
queue that has a TIL of 400. This ramp file has columns with different
percentages of C, M, Y, K, CM, YM, MC, CMY and CMYK. This file prints
and dries quickly even with the highest value column being 100%. When I
read the print of this file I find that the lowest L value is in the
72% column with Lab values being, 9.2, 0.2, -3.3 and the 100% k patch
has Lab values of 15.9, 0.6, -0.1. Does this mean my TIL for this file
should be 316? If so and I force 316 into the Lin tool will it know to
place 72% in CMY and 100% in K? And how does this relate to the TIL
values listed above?
I did cross post this information to the Proofing, Remote, Soft Digest
and thank you Jim Rich for your answer regarding paper type. I did try
another type of paper and while it gave me different results it just
adds to my curiosity regarding TIL and its relationship to the profile
gamut.
Thanks to all that respond.
-Bill-
