I couldn't agree more with what Rolf says here. If profiles
are aimed at giving better results, in practice what I experiment
is that my work is too often spoiled by the lack of will in the printing
world
to implement new solutions. In my experience with printers,
they tend to stick with what worked well for them ten years ago
and wait until their hardware dies or at least greatly hesitate before
making any move.
And I can understand! As people who make a living from laying
ink to paper, anything else is a loss, included the days spent at solving
the many issues with new hard and software and the cost of the exponentially
growing number of upgrades. It ends up with this oddity: a semi professional
photographer like me is more up to date than any printer I have been
working with to that day... and my Epson proofs are more reliable than
anything I can obtain at high cost from a service bureau.
So now when I send an advert to a newspaper, I send it in sRGB.
But of course for quality work, nothing beats CMYK.
Yes a standard source profile common to all would be a great idea!
And each printer would then make his own output profile for his press.
... hope this makes sense!

I wish that all that people would come together and agree to one
standard profile, one web-adress where to download it.
In the hope that all those graphics people out there wouldn't have to
spend hours in setting up their colormanagement workflow and in favour of high
quality.
This is what Paul Schilliger is talking about. He is confused. And he
is right to be so.
