I'm sure Mauro wouldn't mind, so, for all who care, here is a translation of
the introductory text to the chart, provided *free of charge* by yours truly
(I trust that the chart will be easier to interpret without translation):
"Offset ICC profiles for coated papers per ISO standards.
The following is a comparison among 5 ICC profiles for offset printing on
coated paper. Two of these are obsolete (first and third column: the first
version of Euroscale Coated and ISO Coated sb).
Of the other three, i.e., version 2 of Euroscale, ISO Coated and Europe ISO
Coated FOGRA27, the last 2 are the better ones, since they are based on more
recent characterization data (FOGRA27, from 2003).
If the printing press conforms to ISO 12647-2 and uses positive plates (as
is usually the case in Italy and Europe) with type 1 or 2 paper per ISO
standards (i.e., coated or matte), and the printing is done at 60 to 70
lines-per-cm [roughly 150 to 175 lpi -- Marco], the choice must be between
one of these 2 profiles.
The former [ISO Coated] was created by ECI on March 2004, the latter [Europe
ISO Coated FOGRA27] by Adobe a year or so later. Why did Adobe decide to
create their own Europe ISO Coated FOGRA27 profile, and didn't instead elect
to make ECI's profile -- i.e., ISO Coated -- the one used in its own
applications?
Adobe replies as follows:
Adobe's gamut mapping is smoother than ECI's; in other words, the
perceptual rendering intent is better;
This profile more closely resembles our other CMYK profiles;
It was not created with Heidelberg's PrintOpen, which means that no
license fees are owed;
ECI's profile has a much "longer" black generation, which starts at 0%;
the one by Adobe has a "shorter" one that starts at 30% of total ink;
Adobe's profile is smaller in size: 545 KB vs. 1495 KB.
A note on the suffix: at the present stage, ".icc" is being honored by all
operating systems and by all applications. Older Windows systems and
applications may require the ".icm" suffix."
Thanks to Mauro for his work, excellent as ever.
