Paper stretching, aka dimensional elongation, laterally or
circumferentially, occurs in all printing processes that involve any use of
liquid or porous ink, and is a consequence of a thin, dry substrate coming
in contact with moisture. Gravure, flexo, offset, all suffer undergo paper
stretching, to some extent. Press operators try to minimize this effect by
running presses as "dry" as possible.
If this creates elongated dot as shown in Daniel Lowicki sketches remains a
function of speed differential, IMO, between the paper and the blanket,
Neil. Slur can happen anywhere.
