Not a heart, no. Of course, I never thought to do that. So it may have been
possible. You could do some really weird things with Linotype-Hell RIPs and
their built in screening algorithms. Like using lines instead of halftone
dots. I'd kill to have a RIP 40 or 50 here now, even a Vulcan RIP 20 so I
could play with the screening. We did some really weird sh!te sometimes. The
Scitex screening usually worked pretty well. But we did have to add p-noise
periodically when someone screwed up the blend calculations.
As far as why Creo didn't pickup Scitex screen sets, I think they did with
Class screening. I think Class was just renamed but actually Scitex standard
screening. Long time ago though, hard to remember.

Matt,
Could you also build a screen with a custom dot shape like, say, a heart?
For sheer novelty, I'm curious if there's any RIP available today that can
print custom dot shapes (without having to write some complicated formula,
formual). Does anyone have any ideas?

Scitex always had such nice screening. And if it wasn't good enough, you
could always build your own screen set with their Excel spreadsheet.
Although adding a little extra p-noise seemed to work well.
