The first time I ran into L* was when I was working on lut's for the first
LVT film recorder in 1987. LVT used a grayscale for calibration with what
they called "equal brightness" steps. The idea was that each step appeared
to be a "visually equal" to the step before and after it.
I and the people at LVT at the time were frustrated by all the people that
referred to RGB as if were a standardized color space. It was not - it was
whatever each manufacturer decided to make up. This was bolstered when I got
an early Solitaire film recorder. They were smart enough to publish a page
showing many RGB curve shapes that various companies used: L*, B*, PhotoCD
curve, various gammas - I believe there were about 10 different curves they
showed.
Gamma is a poor measure as it is skewed toward one end of the scale. L* is
much more valuable for achieving a good look, but does not have a gamma
equivalent.
