Michael,
Here is a simple gamma formula (with gamma=2.6):
Y = 255 (X / 255)^2.6
As you see, you divide by 255 first to limit the input
values between zero and one, and rescale after the gamma
calculation.
For more info, here is a tutorial I wrote on the math
between xyY and RGB:

Anyone know how to calculate gamma?
I'd like to plot points on a gamma curve. Assume the X
and Y axis have a
scale of 0 to 255 each. Now, let's say I want a gamma
2.6 curve. Given an
X value between 0 and 255 inclusive, I'd like to know
what the corresponding
Y value should be for that gamma. Or maybe I want a
different gamma.
Basically, I'd like to plug in the gamma and the X value
and get the Y
value.
Anyone have a formula?
Michael
