I used to have a Barco Reference Calibrator several years back at my place
of work, and I had all sorts of troubles with it, specially with screen
uniformity and extreme sensitivity to ambient energy fields, which caused
flickering and blotchy color shifts in areas of the display. I do not miss
it, really.
My personal opinion is that CRT technologies, while still valid at the high
end (like a Sony Artisan), are definitely and undeniably on the way out, and
with a ColorEdge CG19" you would probably be getting a better display
overall. Specially considering that the Barco has 8,000 hours of operations
(a hefty chunk, which depreciates it considerably).
Also, given how aged the Optisense is and how relatively old its technology
must be by now, I wonder how good it can be considered to be as a tool to
calibrate your display compared to other present-day colorimeters such as
the ones manufactured by X-Rite and GretagMacbeth: my guess is that it's
probably markedly inferior. A good measuring instrument is vital if you want
a well-behaved display.
Faced with a choice between 2 equally-priced displays, one a 4-year-old
high-end CRT, the other a brand-new high-end LCD monitor (Eizo ColorEdge), I
would go for the latter without hesitation.
Lastly, buy the basICColor Display monitor profiling software together with
an X-Rite Optix XR colorimeter, and you'll be doing quite well. If I'm not
mistaken, the CG19 also supports DDC, which allows the basICColor software
direct access to the controls in the display (brightness, contrast,
luminance, RGB signals, etc).
Best of luck to you.
