RE SpectraView II software:
According to NEC, the SpectraView II software (which ships with the US
version) of the unit is NOT basICColor. It was written in house. This is
different than the software shipped in Europe which IS written by
basICColor. This was also confirmed by someone at basICColor.
RE Gray Ramp and shadow neutrality:
The instrument NEC recommends is their co-branded Gretag Macbeth Display II
which has a second mode/calibration which was done by Gretag specifically
for the wider gamut of this monitor. The instrument can also be used as a
regular Display II by other calibration/profiling software which doesn't
know how to activate/use the second mode. The NEC representative suggested
this is the best instrument for accurate calibration of, in particular, the
deep shadow values.
If you check the on-line SpectraView II user guide, you'll also see that the
SpectraView II software also has a mode where it will average several
measurements in the deep shadows to help account for instrument drift and/or
lack of repeatability. This might be especially useful with other
instruments which may not produce consistent readings at darker values.
