When we purchased our profiling hardware and software, a couple of
months ago. we were instructed to use the 1.8 gamma. The two reasons
main reasons given for this is--please someone correct me if I am
wrong: one, the 1.8 gamma is the recommended gamma for print viewing
conditions, according to the ISO 3664 standard. Two, the 1.8 gamma
will yield better shadow detail then the 2.2 setting.
As per our instructor, this was a recommendation and we were the ones
that needed to make the choice. We opted for the 1.8 for those
reasons. The 1.8 gamma is much warmer looking and took a couple of
days to get used to it, as we were at 2.2 before. We have only been
seriously calibrating our monitors for the last couple of months,
before we used the color sync software utility built into OS X, and
have been extremely pleased with our results. Then again look where we
came from.
I look forward to other responses as we are still in the
early/begining stages of serious color managment--newbies.
