Call me an idealist or just stupid, but wouldn't it be better for everyone
if Apple joined Microsoft and Canon to produce one Color management system
that benefited everyone?

This is where government mandated standards come in. Just as weights and
measures need to be defined by government agreements, so will color. We're
not just children playing around with color pencils. There's a lot of money
and product on the line and it's about time that we put our heads together
to establish world-wide standards once and for all. The ICC was a first step
in that direction.
