That's it... I know that it works, but I'd really like to understand
the mechanics of it. If someone asks me the reason why I use 6500K on
the monitor and 5000K lighting, I simply can't explain.

I've seen this recommended more than once, by people far smarter than
I. But I have yet to find the sense in it.
A sheet of what white paper? I have a lot of different paper around
here, all of it called white, none of it convincing me that it is
indeed white, exactly, and none of it really alike. Then- whose idea
of white? Wouldn't one expect there to be some standard? Maybe "0" A
and B measured lab values? None is mentioned.
Then- if I skew my monitor to match some arbitrary piece of paper,
wouldn't that make the use of "paper white" while soft proofing
somewhat suspect?
Didn't mean to jump on this so hard, just a bit confused about the
issue. Have never managed to find a white point that makes the monitor
match a viewing light very satisfactorily either, so am very
interested.
