The RIP that came with the 4000 was a pared-down version of the ColorBurst
RIP, offering no access to custom profiles. It only allowed the use of OEM
profiles ("canned" profiles). Also, it did not offer linearization and other
functions present in the the full version.
It seems to me that you are better off buying the 4800 and then pairing it
up with the full version of ColorBurst X-Proof, which retails for $795 for
that printer model.
While that price may seem steep, consider that the Epson 4000 Professional
Edition (the one that came with the limited-edition RIP) used to cost
$2,195, versus the $1,795 of the 4000 *without* the RIP. That was a $400
difference. So, the way to look at it is that you could have got a
full-featured RIP for an additional $300, not a steep difference in my
opinion.
In closing, there are also several other RIPs competing with this one at the
level of both price and performance. Honestly, there are too many to mention
on the market, and the list changes almost daily.
Good luck.
