There's really no clear demarcation where one can declare that a
profile uses UCR over GCR or visa-versa.
UCR by definition is CMY reduction/K replacement in neutrals and near-
neutrals only. GCR is the same thing only it simply extends the K
replacement into colors. The START point of the K has little to do
with whether a profile/separation is UCR or GCR. Techically, a UCR
separation COULD start in the highlight/quarter-tones and still be
considered UCR as long as the K replacement didn't creep into non-
neutrals. By the same token, a legitimate GCR separation/profile
could have the K starting at or above the midtone.
Having said all that, I would say a "traditional" UCR separation
would start the K at or perhaps just before the midtone ("scanner
style" separation). A typical GCR separation would start the K
perhaps 10-15% earlier.

I've been studying of our basic 'U.S. Web Coated (SWOP) v2' profile
and am wondering if anyone has information regarding the use of UCR
or GCR gray-component replacement built into the profile.
I have discovered that the black generation starts at 45% and
generally follows generally 'light' to 'medium' black generation
curve (how would anyone describe a curve without a mathematical
equation).
I would normally expect a GCR separation to push more black into my
neutral areas in my quarter tones, but have not seen much (if any)
of that behavior in U.S. Web Coated (SWOP) v2 separations. Of
course, if this profile is built with a GCR sep, how much?
