The "jet-bar" I´m speaking about is treated as any image through the
RIP. This can be created easily: place 4 rectangles (in the lenght of
your print) next to each other and fill them with the primary colors
(appr. 70-80% to avoid too long drying-times). You can create
additional rectangles for the "light"-colors.
Place this group of rectangles left or/and right beside your printout.
The advantage of this simple trick is that all nozzles are fired even
if they are not in use or if they are firing a small amount of ink
(in large areas with very light tones this can result in clogging).
Additionally you may get sharper edges and a reduction of ghost-
prints, lines and other unwanted effects.
If you are not handy with these applications I can create such a jet-
bar and send it via mail to you. Just tell me the lenght of your
print and what/how many colors you are using.
Mit besten Grüssen,
Benedikt Hofmeister

I'd be interested in how this is created. I'm not real handy with
Freehand or Illustrator. Does this file have only the specific
nozzles fire for the color indicated in the pattern, or is it
treated as any image through the Rip.

You can easily create such a jet-bar in any graphic-software
(Illustrator, Freehand, InDesign etc.) not only to detect but
also to
prevent
nozzle-dropout. You can place this jet-bar beside your printout.
I´ve done this very often to prevent dropout when printing large
areas covered with light- and midtones on vutek ultra vu, nur
blueboard,
encad novajet, hp 5500, nur fresco and mimaki jv3.

We have a Mimaki JV-3 Solvent machine, with epson heads. In order
to detect nozzel dropout, both the rip (ergosoft) and the Mimaki
firmware allow the option of printing a thin strip on the edge of
the print of pure ink from each head. This makes it very easy to
detect nozzel drops during the printing. Perhaps this feature
coudl be incorporated into the Rip software you are running.
