that has a pattern for each nozzle where only that nozzle fires. So I wouldn't necessarily completely detect a clog as the pattern would not have a "gap" If one of the nozzles fire, as all are firing.

The pattern is usefull as a visual check. On our Mimaki, I watch it after a print head pass to check for a small line or gap in the color indicating a clogged jet. After several overlapping passes, looking at the pattern might not show a gap because it amy have been filled in. I can send you a photo, Mike of the pattern from our machine if you would like.
