Well, yes, this happens....
some causes:
1) using an RGB driver (so we're talking RGB profile): sometimes these
drivers (notably the one for the HP30) only use black ink as a last
resort, in neutral black colors. Any very dark non-neutral color is
rendered with CMY, and that difference (using K ink vs not using it)
creates inconsistencies in the dark zone of the gamut.
2) sometimes the paper and ink interact in such a way, that over a
certain saturation (over inking) it becomes lighter. So in this case
for example 260% of ink yields a lower L* (darker) than 300% of ink.
Coupling this with the black generation chosen and with the properties
of whatever black ink you're using, you can have a profile in which
many non-neutral 'black points' arise which are local maximums in the
gamut.
in general, reducing the total ink limit and using a more aggressive
black generation setting should help in minimizing the weirdness.
