RIPs have their uses - but I'd be very amazed if you'd get a complete
product with a profiling module for $1K and a spectro thrown in  - if
you did then most members of this list would be out business.

You can use custom profiles without the RIp (mine are $30 and every
other consultant on the colorsync list is at least as good as I am). A
RIP is essential for people doing proofing or poster printing (it
speaks postscript and allows placement of multiples on the paper) but
is less useful for doing photo or fine art.

The 9800 series samples are supposed to be close to an "ideal
printer", so the generic profiles should give good results with Epson
media, although my experience is that a custom profile will always
beat the generic one. With non-Epson media you'll need a profile, but
again the paper manufacturer will have a canned one available.

If, in the past, you say you got acceptable results out of printing to the
Epson RGB driver on 10k machines with the canned profiles then why should
you be disapointed with doing the same on the newer Epson printer
generations?
