Hi
The prints from an Epson 2400 using 'advanced B/W' compared moderately well
with those from my 9600 using ImagePrint (which I do like for just the
neutrality reasons you mention) when using Epson papers. Third party papers
usually needed the b/w icc profile to get them smooth, although I found even
the Epson papers benefited. The key area of my test image that instantly
shows this up is the 'bulls eye' gradient. However, the 2400 was on loan and
not around long enough for a more detailed test of its B/W :-(
I've still got a few of the (r2400) test prints I did and I just looked at
them under the worst 'energy saving' lights in the house they don't show any
untoward shifts.
The tests in the article I mentioned were using printers/inks that I would
would not normally expect to give the best B/W performance, but were aimed
at showing what the QTR icc profiles could 'fix' As you'd expect, the 1290
using colour inks was not exactly neutral under any lighting conditions, and
the black only printing was a little warm.
The QTR profiles generated can only really fix one type of problem - the new
PrintFIX PRO software, for instance, includes an optional extra 224 patch
target (various greys) just for improving B/W performance of the full icc
profiles it creates.
I did have a specific mono ink set in the 1290 for a while, which really
needs something like QTR to get the best results, but I think the mono ink
set market is a declining one, given the improved B/W performance of the
latest printers (not to say it won't give very interesting results, but less
people will feel the need to try it)

I'm currently waiting for Epson UK to send me a 3800 to have a look at. One
of the aspects I'm keen to see, is its B/W performance. I don't know for
sure what inks Epson driver now uses in its mix for B/W?
Bye for now
