I'm wondering how people who read proofs evalutate the hue of the
colorant?
In an inkjet proof I can see that the solid CMYK patches are adjusted
(theoretically) for hue but in laminated proofs like Kodak Approval the
color of the ink is built in.
You can read solid ink density and tonal values as well as overprints
but all this is for not if the hue of the colorant is not correct.
I've always wondered about printers who use SWOP Kodak Approval and
print with Toyo inks but claim their proof is "dead on."
In my own experience when my Kodak Approval was being installed it was
suggested by the tech that the yellow density be run 10 points lower
than press. The reason for this wasn't clear from the tech but I think I
can see why.
The laminated proofs are 100% trap, press isn't. Lowering the yellow
density is an attempt to counter the "bronzing" of the shadows due to
the yellow going down last with 100% trap.
I have a hard time imagining a proof like this being very valid unless
the hue of the colorants were exact to the inks and the dot gain was
matched. Even then the issue of trap comes into play.
A color managed inkjet seems to have the best shot at matching but the
issue of paper color comes into play.
So I guess after all this technology a press proof is stll the best
example of how a press will print.
Just my .03 cents.
